Fusion casting of boerdom.
broken tibia and fibia... how long will it take before i am able to walk?
broke 5 weeks ago currently in full cast..... in half cast next week (bone fused together)..... no surgery req'd.. young adult and athletic..
broke 1/3 above ankle (between knee and ankle)
without seeing your xrays to determine how stable the fracture is (the angulation and displacement), i can only guess from what you inferred that they'll put you in a PTB (patellar tendon bearing) cast next week (at 6 weeks after your injury), it is a shorter cast that stops at your knee which will allow you to put weight on your leg yet provide plenty of stability. you may need to have this cast for another 2-4 weeks while you advance your weight bearing.
your fracture may not necessarily be "non-displaced" (as mentioned by susan s previously); as long as the tibia is in appropriate alignment (relatively straight), not significantly displaced (still has good bone to bone contact for healing), and has not shortened too much, it can be treated in a cast. fibula is often ignored as it is rarely an issue. it is true, as stated by mistify above, that this area 1/3 way up from your ankle has a reputation of not healing well because of blood supply and lack of soft tissue/muscle coverage. however, in a healthy young adult non smoker (hopefully), it shouldn't be much of an issue.
bottom line, it should be soon before you should be able to put weight on it; although it also depends on the characteristic of your particular fracture, the comfort level of the person treating your, and radiographic appearance/evidence of healing. and it will be a while before you can walk "normally" because of the stiffness (in the cast for so long), weakness, and other issues.
